L'essence étant rare, elle était réservé aux armées d'occupation, à la police et aux médecins. Le gazogène, solution de secours, permettait de monter les côtes (par exemple, pour aller à Lauterbach), mais aussi la contrebande (on pouvait cacher des objets sous le bois).

Petrol was scarce and reserved for the allied forces, the police, and doctors. The wood gasifier was a compromise with a very modest motor output. Upward gradients were hard to cope with. The boiler was also used for smuggling (contraband beneath the wood).
